FAQs

Q: What is a double cylinder deadbolt?
A: It is a deadbolt that has a keyway on both faces. It is used residentially for deadbolts next to glass. This is to prevent glass break / reach in.

Q: Do I need a keyed entry knob if I have a deadbolt?
A: No. We typically don't recommend keyed knobs as a primary security measure. Keyed entry knobs, while better than nothing, provide little in the way of real security and allow homeowners that ultimate embarassment - locking themselves out of their own house.

Q: Which way does the keyway go?
A: It depends, however, nearly all major manufacturers in the US design their locks to have the key with the cuts facing up. Over time the weight of the locking pins can bind up the lock if they are installed upside down.

Q: How can I clean my locks?
A: OK, nearly no one asks this but in reality putting some lubricant (tri-flow) in the keyway will help immensely in allowing the lock to function optimally.

Q: Why are automotive keys getting so expensive?
A: As we demand more of our automobiles and the desire for "coolness" the auto (and insurance) industries are providing new challenges daily. From German automobiles that have deadbolt relocking systems found in safes to smooth keys with the cuts on the insides to keys you keep in your pocket and the car knows it is you by the chip in the key, auto locks are getting expensive and challenging. The "SLIM JIM" is not really a viable tool for today's cars.

Q: Do "bump keys" work?
Sure they do. It is a lot faster to smash a window or drill the lock than spend 20 minutes bumping the lock - maybe. Your best defense is a secure keyway such as the new Schlage series Primus or Medeco.
